more music free downloadSaturday, February 16, 2011 D-Day Invasion I wrote about my first experience as a pilot in the war yesterday. Today I’d like to share my experience a few days before. I was chosen to be the Master of Ceremonies for the return of the original Douglas C-47 Skytrain with which Billy Mitchell flew the first trans-Atlantic flight. The occasion was landing on a patch of rough tarmac in England at Abney Park Airfield. Also on board were the leader of the British section of a small section of American and British flyers returning from the U.S. At the end of the flight the first to land was the Chief Petty Officer who had piloted the plane. He was up first as the others pulled up. Their last 50 yards of the flight were watched by a crowd of hundreds. The crew chief saluted them as they eased into the circle. The Old Man came up first, followed by the Old Whore, a pretty paratrooper I met many years later. There was cheering and people singing patriotic songs. We were given drinks and trays of sandwiches. The band played. Billy Mitchell climbed out, briefly spoke, and then another officer climbed out, took off his hat, and stuck it on Billy’s head. He did so in salute. Later we were invited to take a tour of the airfield and of the stores where these old crates had been stored. I took a walk through Abney Park. The field was small and there weren’t that many planes left. Back then they were used for training. The bomb-bay doors were welded shut. Hovering over the field there were many ghost planes. There were two B-17s and two B-29s that were in the U.S. inventory and stored here before the war. We were taken for a ride on an engine-driven railroad along an old, now obsolete, runway. We came to an area where there were dozens of rotting and rotting B-17s. There was a field where a number of early trans-Atlantic flights were made. We took a walk through the abandoned buildings. We came to a little hut where wooden pigeons were mounted on the wall. On the door was “IN EASTLAND, NOV. 13, 1942” and above that the slogan “Destroyers Wanted.” I was only on this trip for two days. Later that day Billy and the Old
